Expect the unexpected. So states the catch phrase that describes the tropical South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea . As I soon discovered, the unexpected propelled me not only into the jungle depths and lush mountain forests of Papua New Guinea , but also into an unknown world of lifetime fitness and natural bodybuilding.
Its advent was ego-bruising. While leading a 4-man documentary video crew into some remote regions of the country, filming to capture the splendid beauty of nature and to celebrate tribal culture, my crew was outpacing me as we climbed up and down the slippery slopes of tropical waterfalls. Not too bad, I thought, as I was 45 and my crew ranged in age from 18 to 30. Still, it was embarrassing. As their leader, I had to lead by example and should have been the one out front climbing those slopes and not tagging along out of breath to bring up the rear. Not to mention the fact that our fleet footed New Guinea counterparts got a big kick out of my panting and struggling.
After returning home to Maryland , I promptly arranged an appointment with a personal trainer to remedy this situation. Hence, enter into my life DOUG. Doug worked up an initial plan for me to return to some semblance of endurance and strength so I could carry all that camera gear and still keep on two feet for future documentary expeditions. Under his guidance and nurture, I soon achieved my initial goals within the first several months. But by now, I was hooked. Not only had I achieved my initial fitness goals – but I got the fitness bug that I lacked since my 20’s. He suggested another personal fitness goal --- and because I am not an avid cyclist, runner or soccer player --- I really had to think of something that would match my interests. The connection to natural body building seemed a perfect fit – and with its synergy of strength training, cardio, nutrition, and mental focus – - it changed my life! Thanks to Doug, my body fat is now around 11-12%, and at 170 lbs, I see muscles that I forgot I ever had and, although I am no 20-something anymore, I feel like I am! This was exciting stuff!
So from exploring the tropics of Papua New Guinea , to exploring the world of natural bodybuilding back home – I owe a debt of gratitude to Doug for all his help and encouragement. In fact, I plan to enter my first natural competition for “Masters” (over 45 Division) early next year.
Thanks Doug for your support and guidance!
